In 2021, the telecommunications sector had an average of 191,720,117 voice users per month.

However, over the course of the year, there were fluctuations in each quarter and the year ended with less voice subscribers.

This is evident since by December 2021, there were about 195 million active voice users, about 5 million less than the recorded number for January 2021. The trend was similar for internet subscribers over the same time period.

This drop may be as a result of the FG’s directive to link mobile numbers to NIN. This could have led users to abandon unregistered numbers.

MTN shone as the most popular network, being almost ‘everywhere you go’ by owning almost 40% of the market on average. While Glo and Airtel were in a close battle for second place, Glo still had a higher number of subscribers than Airtel.

In terms of market share by location, Lagos had the largest user subscription per quarter of any state with over 23 million average voice users. This is more than double its closest rival which was Kano with about 11.5 million voice users.
